Dr. Gemma Turon is the Co-Founder and CEO of Ersilia, an AI-powered nonprofit that helps scientists in low-and-middle-income countries develop treatments for neglected diseases with open-source AI models. As the leader of Ersilia, Gemma has received the BlackRock Nonprofit Employee Choice Award, was featured in Forbes as leading one of the most promising tech nonprofit startups, and has published work in prestigious international scientific journals. She is an active member of several open-source communities, including Open Life Sciences and the Software Sustainability Institute, where she is a UK Fellow. Additionally, Gemma mentors underrepresented students in STEM through the Outreachy program. She earned her PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona, receiving the Extraordinary PhD Award for her thesis.
