John Thickstun is an assistant professor of Computer Science at Cornell University, where he researches methods that make AI not just smarter, but more controllable and creative. John obtained a PhD for work on generative models at the University of Washington, and completed postdoctoral work at the Stanford Center for Research on Foundation Models. His achievements include the first diffusion model for text generation, generative watermarks for language models, and the anticipatory music transformer. His work has been featured in media outlets including TechCrunch, the Wall Street Journal, and the Times of London, and recognized by outstanding-paper awards at NeurIPS and ACL.
