Litigation Partner at Cleary Gotlieb
Generative AI in copyright and IP

Angela Dunning is a litigation partner in the Silicon Valley office of Cleary Gottlieb, an elite international law firm with offices across the globe. Practicing at the cutting edge of the generative AI revolution, Angela is defending leading AI developers against copyright and other claims arising from the training and output of both diffusion and large language models. She also counsels developers and users of AI models, as well as content creators, on the rapidly evolving regulatory and legal landscape to help them identify and mitigate risk. In addition to the safe, lawful, and fair development and deployment of AI tools, Angela’s practice focuses on representing technology companies in copyright, trademark, trade secret, advertising, unfair competition, and right of publicity cases, as well as individuals and human rights organizations in pro bono civil rights and asylum work. She handles both trials and high-profile federal appeals, interfaces with the U.S. Copyright Office and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on policy, is a recognized thought leader and frequent speaker on AI legal issues throughout the country, and teaches trademark law at UC Berkeley School of Law. With a background in literature and creative writing, Angela is also a science fiction nerd, art lover, humanist and techno-optimist working to get AI right for her four children and the generations of children and non-human intelligences to follow.
